Trump Halts San Francisco Troop Surge After Tech Leaders’ Pleas
UPDATE: President Donald Trump has just announced a reversal on his planned troop deployment to San Francisco, following urgent discussions with city officials and influential tech leaders. The decision comes after a phone call with Mayor Daniel Lurie on Wednesday night, where Lurie emphasized the city’s progress in combating crime.
In a post on Truth Social Thursday afternoon, Trump confirmed he would delay the federal “surge” originally scheduled for Saturday. “Friends of mine who live in the area called last night to ask me not to go forward with the surge,” Trump stated, acknowledging the mayor’s request for more time.
Mayor Lurie welcomed the conversation, telling Trump that “San Francisco is on the rise.” He highlighted recent improvements, including increased visitor numbers and a revitalized workforce. “I told him the same thing I told our residents: we are making substantial progress here,” Lurie added in a statement.
Trump expressed skepticism about the mayor’s approach, stating, “I think he is making a mistake, because we can do it much faster.” However, he agreed to give Lurie a chance to demonstrate his capability to address the city’s challenges.
The president’s decision reflects the influence of prominent tech executives, including Nvidia co-founder Jensen Huang and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, who urged him to reconsider the military presence. “Great people like Jensen Huang, Marc Benioff, and others have called saying that the future of San Francisco is great,” Trump noted.
The delay allows city officials to implement their strategies to tackle crime without the presence of federal troops, which many residents and leaders have voiced concerns about. The administration’s earlier plans had sparked fears of increased tensions in the community.
As the situation develops, residents and officials are watching closely to see if Lurie’s efforts can indeed turn the tide in San Francisco. The president’s decision not to proceed with the surge opens a new chapter in the city’s ongoing battle against crime and public safety.
