Urgent Rise in Homelessness Referrals Hits East Lindsey
UPDATE: East Lindsey is facing a growing crisis as more than 468 referrals for individuals sleeping rough were reported in just the last year. This alarming statistic, released by the East Lindsey District Council, highlights a significant rise in homelessness, with referrals increasing from 440 for 362 individuals the previous year.
During a council meeting on October 14, 2024, officials revealed that between April 2024 and March 2025, the district received referrals for 208 distinct individuals experiencing homelessness. This surge in referrals emphasizes the urgent need for immediate action and support in the region.
Carol Rippin, team leader for the rough sleeping intervention team at the South and East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership, stated, “We have an increasing number of referrals,” underscoring the complexities faced by those in need. She identified key challenges, including the mobility of rough sleepers and safety risks that hinder support efforts.
The ongoing cost of living crisis has severely impacted young adults, particularly those under 25, making housing increasingly unaffordable. Rippin emphasized that “the cost of living and universal credit limitations make housing unaffordable, especially for under-25-year-olds.” She highlighted that many landlords prefer tenants with stable jobs, leaving those on benefits, especially those with complex needs, struggling to find housing.
Despite these challenges, the district council is actively working to combat homelessness. Rippin noted, “We’re looking at preventing rough sleeping wherever possible, and wherever it does occur, it is rare, brief, and non-recurrent.” The focus remains on supporting individuals facing addiction, mental health issues, and the risk of re-offending.
From March 2024 to April 2025, the council successfully helped 113 people secure accommodation, primarily through private rentals and social housing. Yet, Rippin acknowledged that some individuals experiencing homelessness refuse assistance, complicating efforts to provide universal support.
As the number of referrals continues to climb, the East Lindsey District Council is committed to finding and supporting those in need. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated as officials work tirelessly to build trust and encourage engagement among the homeless population.
The community must stay informed and engaged as this situation develops. Residents are encouraged to share this critical information to raise awareness and foster support for those affected by homelessness in East Lindsey. More updates will follow as the council continues its efforts to combat this pressing issue.
