Will Smith Powers Dodgers to Crucial Game 2 Win in World Series
UPDATE: Will Smith’s outstanding performance propelled the Los Angeles Dodgers to a vital 5-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 2 of the World Series on October 28, 2023. After battling a hairline fracture in his right hand, Smith’s resurgence comes at a pivotal moment, evening the series at 1-1.
Smith’s contributions were critical as he recorded two hits, including a game-changing solo home run that traveled an impressive 404 feet in the seventh inning. This homer not only broke the tie but also showcased that his injury woes may finally be behind him. “It’s a big swing, obviously,” Smith stated. “I’m just trying to keep that momentum going for us.”
Despite missing the final three weeks of the regular season and the National League wild-card series, Smith has emerged as the Dodgers’ top performer in the playoffs. With a postseason batting average of .314 and 11 hits in total, he leads all Dodgers with at least 10 at-bats this postseason. His timely hitting has been crucial as the Dodgers now return to Dodger Stadium, where they will look to take control of the series.
Manager Dave Roberts noted that Smith’s time off allowed him to heal, stating, “That week off got him over the hump.” Smith played 101 games behind the plate before his injury, and the extra rest appears to have revitalized him for the postseason’s high stakes.
As the Dodgers prepare for Game 3 on Monday, Smith emphasized the importance of maintaining focus. “I’m just trying not to do too much,” he explained. This disciplined approach seems to be paying off, as he has reached safely in seven of his eight postseason starts.
The emotional atmosphere of the World Series drives players like Smith to excel. “It’s fun. It’s pressure baseball,” he said, highlighting the intense dynamics of postseason play. Smith’s performance not only ignites his team but also energizes the fanbase, making him a player to watch as the series unfolds.
As anticipation builds for Game 3, the Dodgers, now with home-field advantage, are poised to capitalize on their momentum. All eyes will be on Smith and his ability to continue leading the team as they pursue their third World Series title.
