Winter Park Physician Avoids Charges in Underage Drinking Case
UPDATE: A Winter Park physician, Hao Nhu Tran, will NOT face criminal charges following a house party where minors allegedly consumed alcohol, leading to a 15-year-old girl being hospitalized. This shocking decision comes just days after Tran’s October 12 arrest for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and serving alcohol to individuals under 21.
Police reports indicate that Tran, aged 51, hosted an open house party at her home on Chestnut Avenue on the night of October 11, 2023, which attracted numerous underage attendees. Authorities were alerted shortly after midnight when calls poured in about children appearing “falling down drunk.”
Upon arrival, officers discovered empty alcoholic beverage containers, including High Noon and Smirnoff, in the trash bags of Tran’s kitchen. According to Tran’s account, she claimed the gathering was intended for children from her son’s school; however, unknown minors from other schools also attended.
The situation escalated when a 15-year-old girl was found passed out in an upstairs bedroom. Tran reported that she ensured the girl was breathing before contacting her mother, who subsequently called 911. Emergency responders transported the girl to a hospital where she was found vomiting and barely coherent, raising serious concerns about the event’s supervision.
Despite the alarming circumstances, prosecutors announced on Monday that they will not pursue charges against Tran, citing that “evidence at trial will not overcome one or more affirmative defenses.” This decision has raised eyebrows, given the potential risks posed to minors at the party.
The girl’s mother expressed her reluctance to press charges against Tran, revealing that she felt the physician was hesitant to call for emergency assistance herself. The incident highlights critical issues surrounding underage drinking and parental responsibility, sparking discussions in the community about safety and supervision at social gatherings.
Tran, who specializes in ear, nose, and throat conditions according to her profile on AdventHealth, now faces scrutiny over her actions during the party. The case has drawn significant media attention, leaving many in Winter Park wondering about the implications of the prosecutor’s decision.
This developing story raises important questions about the legal responsibilities of adults in similar situations. As authorities continue to monitor underage drinking incidents, communities are urged to reflect on the safety measures necessary to protect minors in social settings.
