Young American Pays Off $90K Debt, Moves to Australia for Better Life
UPDATE: In a remarkable turn of events, Gabriel Filer, a 34-year-old urban planner, has successfully paid off over $90,000 in student debt and moved to Sydney, Australia for a fresh start. After living with his parents for 7.5 years, Filer’s story highlights the sacrifices made to achieve financial freedom and a better quality of life.
Filer cleared his debt just before relocating in April 2024, demonstrating a disciplined approach to savings and financial planning. He began this journey in 2019, motivated by a desire to escape the pressures of life in the United States. The combination of rising civil unrest and the pandemic fueled his ambition to move overseas.
Before his departure, Filer focused intently on paying off his debt. He started making monthly payments of $1,000 from his paycheck and strategically saved his earnings during the pandemic, taking advantage of a three-year student loan payment pause. By August 2023, he successfully eliminated his student loan balance, allowing him to save $38,000 for relocation and emergencies.
Upon arriving in Sydney, Filer secured a position as a grants officer in the education sector, earning 113,575 AUD (approximately $73,700 USD), which is significantly higher than his previous salary in the US. His initial rental costs of $1,645 per month felt more reasonable compared to American cities, further enhancing his quality of life.
Filer’s journey to Australia was not only about financial freedom but also about finding a more balanced lifestyle. He described the work-life balance in Australia as “unparalleled,” stating that he no longer feels guilty leaving work at the end of the day—a stark contrast to his experiences in the US.
With his financial burdens lifted, Filer is enjoying his newfound independence and is already planning to purchase a home in June 2025. His story resonates with many who dream of starting anew abroad, emphasizing both the emotional and practical benefits of such a significant life change.
As Filer reflects on his journey, he encourages others considering a similar path to take the leap. His experience serves as an inspiration for those weighed down by debt or seeking a better life outside of the US.
