Global Response Needed as Hurricane Melissa Devastates Caribbean
Hurricane Melissa, which struck Jamaica on October 31, 2025, has left a trail of destruction across the Caribbean, particularly impacting Cuba and Haiti. The storm, classified as a Category 5 hurricane, resulted in significant loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure, prompting a call for international recovery efforts.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), over 54,000 people in Cuba remain displaced, with approximately 7,500 individuals residing in official shelters. The extent of the damage has surpassed initial estimates, affecting over 600 health facilities and 90,000 homes. In response, UN agencies have mobilized to assist around 140,000 people, providing shelter, food, and medical supplies.
In Haiti, the hurricane claimed more than 40 lives, and humanitarian partners are expanding their operations to address the widespread devastation. The storm’s impact has drawn attention to the ongoing challenges faced by Caribbean nations in the wake of climate change.
The United States has contributed nearly $37 million in emergency assistance in response to Hurricane Melissa, as stated by the U.S. Department of State. While this support is crucial, some observers argue that it falls short compared to international aid commitments, such as the proposed $40 billion bailout for Argentina.
Countries within the region are also stepping up their assistance efforts. Jamaica has expressed gratitude for support from Canada, while Venezuela has dispatched a second aid shipment to Cuba. Communities in the United States, particularly in places like Austin, Texas, and New England, are organizing fundraisers and donation drives to help those affected.
Humanitarian Efforts and Climate Change Discussions
The ongoing discussions at the COP30 climate change conference in Brazil have highlighted the urgent need for global action. As representatives from affected nations convene, the impact of Hurricane Melissa underscores the necessity of addressing climate change. UnaMay Gordon, a former director of climate change for the Jamaican government, emphasized the profound loss experienced by the nation, stating, “We lost cultural heritage; 300-year-old churches are lost. A part of our identity was lost with it.”
The Prime Minister of Jamaica has indicated that the damages could amount to 28% to 32% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). The storm’s unprecedented strength is attributed to climate change, which has increased the likelihood of such severe weather events.
Theresa Rodriguez-Moodie, CEO of the Jamaica Environment Trust, expressed concern over the frequency and intensity of hurricanes, stating, “These storms are becoming the norm, unfortunately, and it is fuelled by the climate crisis.” She stressed the need for immediate commitments to address climate change and the financial support necessary for adaptation and recovery.
Ongoing Recovery and Community Support
As communities begin the long process of recovery, organizations like World Central Kitchen are providing essential services. They are distributing food kits and kitchen equipment to families who have lost their means of cooking due to the storm.
While many individuals in the U.S. face their own financial challenges, there are still opportunities for support, including sharing information and updates about relief efforts.
The road to recovery from Hurricane Melissa is daunting, yet the resilience of affected communities, combined with international support, is vital to overcoming this disaster. As discussions continue at COP30, the focus remains on not only addressing the immediate needs of those impacted but also tackling the underlying issues of climate change that exacerbate such catastrophic events.
