Hurricane Melissa Causes Catastrophic Damage, 39 Confirmed Dead
Hurricane Melissa made its second landfall on the morning of October 29, 2025, unleashing powerful winds and torrential rain on eastern Cuba. This Category 5 hurricane, one of the strongest in Atlantic basin history, had previously struck Jamaica, leaving behind widespread devastation. The storm’s aftermath has resulted in at least 39 confirmed fatalities across multiple countries, according to data from Weather Fatalities.
As reports emerge about the extensive damage, the human toll continues to rise. In Haiti, the mayor of Petit-Groove, Jean Bertrand Subrème, reported that his town suffered 25 deaths due to severe flooding caused by the hurricane. Rising water from a nearby river overwhelmed its banks, inundating communities and causing numerous houses to collapse. “Several people are still trapped under rubble,” Subrème stated, underscoring the desperation faced by residents.
While Hurricane Melissa wreaked havoc in Haiti, it also affected other regions. Reports indicate that a total of 29 deaths have been attributed to the storm in Haiti alone, with additional fatalities occurring in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. The Dominican Republic has reported four deaths, including one in the capital city of Santo Domingo, while Jamaica has confirmed four fatalities across various locations, including St. Elizabeth and St. Catherine.
The toll from Hurricane Melissa extends beyond immediate fatalities. According to Weather Fatalities, the primary causes of death include drowning (27), landslides (3), and crushing incidents (2). Furthermore, three fatalities were classified as indirect, resulting from tree-cutting accidents and electrocution.
Local officials in Jamaica are still assessing the situation. During a press conference, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Desmond McKenzie stated, “We are not in a position to speak about any deaths because we have not had any reports of any deaths so far.” His comments reflect the ongoing uncertainty as rescue efforts continue across the region.
As the storm continues to move, its impact is being felt in multiple areas. In Cuba, residents are bracing for the aftermath as recovery efforts begin. Reports of power outages and property damage are widespread, contributing to the growing concerns about the long-term effects of Hurricane Melissa on affected communities.
The situation remains fluid, and officials are working tirelessly to assess the full extent of the damage. As rescue operations continue, the hope is to locate any missing individuals and provide assistance to those in need. The international community is closely monitoring the developments, ready to offer support as required.
In the coming days, more details will emerge regarding the storm’s impact and the ongoing recovery efforts. The urgency of the situation remains high, with humanitarian organizations preparing to respond to the pressing needs of those affected by Hurricane Melissa.
