Local Criminals Arrested After Louvre Museum Heist

Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the audacious heist at the Louvre Museum last month. According to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau, the suspects are local petty criminals with no known ties to organized crime. The group, consisting of three men and one woman, resides in or around Seine-Saint-Denis, a suburb to the north of Paris.

One of the men, aged 37, has a significant criminal history, featuring 11 prior convictions, ten of which were for robbery. Beccuau noted in an interview with FranceInfo that while the suspect’s record is varied, it does not typically indicate involvement with organized crime. Another suspect has 15 previous convictions, including two for robbery. Both men were also convicted for their roles in a robbery that occurred in Paris in 2015. The detained woman, 38, is in a long-term relationship with one of the men.

Beccuau remarked on the profile of the suspects, stating, “They are clearly local people.” When asked if she found their background unusual, she responded, “I don’t find it that surprising. What we are seeing now is that people with no significant association with organized crime are progressing relatively quickly to committing extremely serious crimes.”

The Heist Details

The theft took place on October 19, 2023, targeting the Apollo Gallery, which contains the French crown jewels. The thieves employed a truck-mounted ladder to access the gallery through a window. Once inside, they broke into two high-security display cases, absconding with nine valuable items. Among the stolen treasures was a jewelry set featuring diamonds and sapphires that had previously belonged to Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense.

The incident has raised concerns about security at one of the world’s most renowned museums. With the Louvre attracting millions of visitors each year, the implications of this theft extend beyond the immediate loss of valuable artifacts.
