Pope Leo XIV began the year 2026 with a heartfelt appeal for peace, emphasizing the plight of nations “bloodied by conflict” and families suffering from violence. The pope celebrated a New Year’s Day Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica on January 1 and later addressed a crowd of pilgrims and tourists gathered in the piazza, offering a special prayer from his studio overlooking the square.

During this significant occasion, which coincides with the church’s World Day of Peace, Pope Leo urged collective prayer for tranquility among nations deeply affected by strife. He stated, “Let us all pray together for peace: first, among nations bloodied by conflict and suffering, but also within our homes, in families wounded by violence or pain.” His words resonate with the ongoing global calls for reconciliation and healing.

In his recent Christmas homily, Pope Leo condemned the “rubble and open wounds” left by wars, specifically highlighting the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. He also appealed to leaders in Russia and Ukraine during his Christmas blessing, urging them to find the “courage” to engage in direct talks aimed at ending their protracted conflict.

Upcoming Celebrations and Meetings

After a demanding holiday season, the pope will take a few days of respite before celebrating the Epiphany holiday on January 6. This celebration marks a significant moment as it also concludes the 2025 Holy Year, a quarter-century event that attracted millions of pilgrims to Rome.

Following the Epiphany, Pope Leo XIV will preside over a two-day meeting with the entire College of Cardinals. This gathering includes both the cardinals who participated in his election and those over the age of 80 who remain part of the college. Notably, Pope Leo is reviving a tradition that his predecessor, Pope Francis, had largely set aside, aiming to seek counsel from the cardinals on governance matters affecting the Catholic Church, which serves approximately 1.4 billion followers worldwide.

Pope Leo XIV made history as the first American pontiff when he was elected by fellow cardinals at a Vatican conclave in May 2025. His leadership and actions continue to draw attention as he navigates the complexities of global peace and church governance in his papacy.
