A powerful tornado struck Southern Brazil on November 24, 2023, resulting in the deaths of at least five individuals and injuring 432 others. The Paraná State Government reported that four fatalities occurred in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, while one was confirmed in Guarapuava. The tornado caused significant structural damage, trapping residents in the debris, prompting emergency search and rescue operations that continued into Saturday.

The local authorities, including the Military Fire Department of Paraná, mobilized rescue crews and medical personnel to assist those affected. Among the injured, nine individuals sustained serious injuries. Emergency services worked tirelessly to provide medical care and support to those impacted by this devastating event.

Government Response and Ongoing Recovery Efforts

In response to the disaster, Brazilian officials at both local and federal levels visited the affected regions on Saturday morning. Initial assessments classified the tornado as an EF-2, but further evaluations of the destruction may lead to a reclassification as an EF-3. Wind gusts were recorded between 111 and 155 mph, contributing to the extensive damage throughout the area.

Since early November, several cities in Paraná have experienced severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, storms, and hail. The State Government has taken emergency measures to allocate resources for victim assistance and the rebuilding of damaged infrastructure. As of Friday, 14 cities in Paraná were declared to be in a state of emergency.

The situation remains fluid as authorities assess the full extent of the damage and coordinate recovery efforts. Community support and government aid will be crucial in the coming weeks as those affected begin the process of rebuilding their lives.
