Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has commuted the federal prison sentence of former U.S. Representative George Santos. Santos, who was serving over seven years for fraud and identity theft, had pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including deceiving donors and stealing the identities of 11 individuals to fund his political campaign. His sentence was handed down in April after he admitted to these offenses last year.

Santos reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, New Jersey, on July 25, 2023. He is currently housed in a minimum-security prison camp accommodating fewer than 50 inmates. In a post on his social media platform, Trump stated, “I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY.”

The commutation has raised eyebrows, especially given Santos’ appeals for leniency shortly after his sentencing. He asserted that the punishment was excessively harsh and politically motivated. His case garnered support from Marjorie Taylor Greene, a fellow Republican and former House colleague, who labeled the sentence a “grave injustice” in a letter addressed to the White House.

Santos, a rising star within the GOP, made headlines as the first openly gay Republican elected to Congress in 2022. He won a seat representing parts of Queens and Long Island but served less than a year in office. Investigations revealed that he had fabricated significant aspects of his life story, leading to scrutiny over how he financed his campaign.

Despite claiming to be a successful business consultant, Santos admitted to never graduating from Baruch College or being a standout volleyball player, as he had previously asserted. His claims of employment at major financial institutions like Citigroup and Goldman Sachs were also proven false. Santos later stated he was “Jew-ish,” citing a family background, despite being raised in a Catholic household. In reality, he was facing financial difficulties, including eviction.

In 2023, Santos was charged with multiple offenses, including stealing from campaign donors, fraudulently collecting unemployment benefits, and lying to Congress about his financial status. Shortly thereafter, he became only the sixth member in the history of the U.S. House of Representatives to be expelled by his colleagues.
