Ukrainian Forces Target Key Fuel Pipeline Supporting Russian Army
Ukrainian military intelligence has confirmed a successful strike on a critical fuel pipeline in the Moscow region, which supplies the Russian army. The operation occurred late on October 6, 2023, according to a statement from the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine, known by its acronym HUR. This action is described as a significant blow to Russian military logistics.
The targeted infrastructure, the Koltsevoy pipeline, stretches over 250 miles and delivers gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel from refineries located in Ryazan, Nizhny Novgorod, and Moscow. HUR reported that the operation destroyed all three fuel lines, which have a combined capacity of transporting up to 3 million tons of jet fuel, 2.8 million tons of diesel, and 1.6 million tons of gasoline annually. HUR’s chief, Kyrylo Budanov, stated, “Our strikes have had more impact than sanctions,” referring to the international measures imposed on Russia since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Russian Military Claims Victory in Pokrovsk
In a related development, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces have thwarted a team of Ukrainian special operations troops attempting to halt Russian advances in the eastern city of Pokrovsk. Video footage released by the ministry purportedly shows two captured Ukrainian soldiers discussing intense fighting and their encirclement by Russian forces. The authenticity of the videos has not been independently verified, and there has been no immediate response from Kyiv regarding these claims.
The situation in Pokrovsk remains volatile, with conflicting narratives from both sides. Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted last week that his troops had encircled defenders in the city. However, Ukrainian Army Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi clarified that while the conditions are undoubtedly challenging, there is no encirclement. Syrskyi emphasized, “A comprehensive operation to destroy and push out enemy forces from Pokrovsk is ongoing.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged on October 6 that some Russian units had infiltrated Pokrovsk but expressed confidence in Ukraine’s ability to eliminate these forces. He indicated that around 170,000 Russian troops have been deployed in the Donetsk region, emphasizing Moscow’s determination to capture this critical area.
Recent Attacks and Civilian Impact
The ongoing conflict has seen escalated violence, with a recent Russian missile strike in the southern Mykolaiv region resulting in one civilian fatality and 19 injuries, including a nine-year-old girl. Local officials reported that the missile was an Iskander ballistic missile, highlighting the risks facing civilians amidst military operations.
Additionally, another strike early on October 7 sparked a fire at a gas plant in the central Poltava region, as Russian forces intensified their attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. These strikes have contributed to widespread power outages across the country, which Ukrainian officials have termed “systematic energy terror.”
In a significant overnight operation, Russian forces launched 223 drones against Ukraine, with Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepting 206. Nevertheless, 17 drones managed to strike targets across seven Ukrainian regions, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
The toll of the conflict extends beyond the immediate battlefield, as Russia’s actions have led to civilian casualties and infrastructure damage across Ukraine. As both nations continue to grapple with ongoing military engagements, the situation remains highly fluid, with significant implications for regional stability and security.
