Venezuelan President Maduro Faces Narco-Terrorism Charges in New York
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, arrived at Stewart Air National Guard Base, located just north of New York City, on Saturday afternoon. Their arrival followed a daring U.S. military operation in Caracas that resulted in their capture. The couple was taken from their home in Venezuela and transported to the USS Iwo Jima warship before being flown to New York to face serious criminal charges.
According to two sources familiar with the situation, Maduro and Flores are expected to be housed at the Metropolitan Detention Center, a federal facility in Brooklyn. They are facing charges outlined in a superseding indictment filed in the Southern District of New York, which accuses Maduro and several members of his family and cabinet of conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism and to import cocaine into the United States.
The indictment, unsealed on March 30, 2024, by Attorney General Pam Bondi, states, “They will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts.” This legal action appears to mirror similar charges from a 2020 indictment against Maduro and key aides.
The U.S. government claims that for over 25 years, leaders of Venezuela, including Maduro, have abused their public trust to facilitate the importation of large quantities of cocaine into the United States. The indictment alleges that Maduro is at the forefront of this corruption, using his authority to transport thousands of tons of cocaine across borders.
In addition to Maduro’s involvement, the indictment implicates Flores in her husband’s alleged criminal activities. It is claimed that she brokered a meeting between a major drug trafficker and Néstor Reverol Torres, the director of Venezuela’s National Anti-Drug Office. Flores allegedly accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in 2007, including a scheme where the trafficker arranged a bribe of $100,000 per flight to ship cocaine, as outlined by prosecutors.
Reverol Torres himself was indicted by U.S. prosecutors in 2015 for similar charges. The 2020 indictment also included allegations that Maduro collaborated with the Colombian guerrilla group Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) to traffic cocaine and weapons into the United States.
Maduro has consistently denied the accusations leveled against him, maintaining his innocence in the face of significant legal challenges.
In the aftermath of the operation that led to his capture, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States would “run Venezuela at least temporarily” and potentially exploit its vast oil reserves for sale to other nations, indicating a significant shift in U.S. policy regarding the country.
This dramatic capture of Maduro reflects a pivotal moment in U.S.-Venezuela relations and raises questions about the future of both Maduro’s presidency and the political landscape in Venezuela. As events unfold, the legal proceedings against Maduro and his wife will likely draw international attention, further complicating an already tense situation in South America.
