Writer Sophia Al-Maria has signed on to develop the television series The Many Lives of Miss K, which explores the extraordinary life of fashion model and World War II secret agent Toto Koopman. The series is a collaboration between Finite Films & TV and Shoni Productions and is based on a biography by Jean-Noël Liaut.

The narrative will follow Koopman, a trailblazer in her field, who was born in the early 20th century to a Dutch cavalry officer and a half-Indonesian mother. Her mixed heritage subjected her to various forms of discrimination, influencing her perspective on life. As noted by Finite Films & TV, Koopman made history in the 1930s as the first mixed-race model to grace the cover of French Vogue.

Tracing a Remarkable Journey

The series aims to chronicle Koopman‘s dual identity as both a fashion icon and a covert operative. Her remarkable journey includes her involvement in espionage activities during WWII, which ultimately led to her capture in 1941. Finite Films & TV highlighted that Koopman survived the Nazi concentration camps and later emerged as a prominent figure in the post-war art world.

Amy Gardner, founder and executive producer at Finite Films & TV, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Al-Maria. “The aim of this project is to delve into Toto Koopman’s complex and inspiring life and do it justice,” she stated. “We couldn’t be more excited to have her on board, and to be working with the amazing Shoni Productions team.”

This series adds to Finite Films & TV’s expanding portfolio, which includes a range of internationally driven projects, such as the psychological horror film The Fears directed by Andrew Gunn and the upcoming drama Ben & Lucy, featuring Steven Cree and directed by Cora Bissett.

Future Collaborations and Projects

In addition to The Many Lives of Miss K, Finite Films & TV recently announced plans to co-produce Two of Us, the first English-language feature film by Indian director Anu Menon, in partnership with Bright Pictures.

Meanwhile, Shoni Productions, which has worked on projects like The Black Sea and What Is to Come, is also developing multiple high-end television dramas and feature films. Dana Høegh, founder of Shoni, has an impressive background, including executive production roles for notable projects.

With her recent accolades, including being honored as the Most Promising Filmmaker at the 2009 Doha Tribeca Film Festival, Sophia Al-Maria is well-positioned to bring the compelling story of Toto Koopman to life, blending the worlds of fashion and wartime intrigue into a captivating series.
